Fedrigoni 365/2022

The 2022 edition of Fedrigoni 365 is the product of artists from different disciplines and prestigious creative-printing partners, culminating in a true celebration of the creative eco-system in its entirety. This unique, multi-faceted partnership has produced a calendar that serves as an educational toolkit and source of inspiration for new designers, showcasing the endless possibilities of finishing and book binding. Instead of presenting itself as a single-bound book, this year’s calendar is a collection of four volumes. My chosen volume is printed on Fedrigoni’s 120gsm Materica paper, using Pantone 874 ink, with casebound binding and exposed edging.

I was assigned 16th August. On this day in 1898, Edwin Prescott was awarded a patent for the “Loop-The-Loop” roller coaster on Coney Island. Today is celebrated as National Roller Coaster Day, which inspired my number 16, which is cut and curled from Fedrigoni paper. Being inspired by the loop-the-loop rollercoaster, I wanted to make a piece of type out of one continuous piece of paper for each number, so I developed a way of cutting out long strips of paper, then using the sharp edge of scissors to curl the paper. This took many attempts experimenting with different Fedrigoni weights and paper stocks to get the right amount of curl, using more curl for the number six, and less for the number one. I then photographed the piece at different angles to shoot the perfect shot for my submission.

All profits from previous editions have been donated to mental health charity, Mind. Book design by TM Studio.
